At least where I live they also hold their value really well so you can make a profit when restoring these.
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

Or not. Comment on BAT:
“Having seen this beast up close and personal, I would not pay that price for it. The cab does have quite a bit of rust. The top is mostly non-existent. That piece of OSB on top of it is there to keep the weather out (though they didn’t put it on there near early enough). Age and weather have not treated this machine well. It was offered at an auction here in Boise back in October 2015. The pictures in the ad are the same pictures that were on the auction site.”

Sounds like it would need a fair amount of custom fabrication work or parts shipped from Germany to have it even somewhat workable.
As much as I like Unimogs, the answer to this one is CP.

That’s what always gets me: the cost of parts. I really would like to make a homemade camper at one point or another, and a Unimog camper would be amazing, but parts are hard to come by, or have to be shipped from Europe. Thinking about something that has widely available parts, but a decent enough chassis to put a camper on has me a bit stumped. Maybe a stretched Ford F-250?

Dual rear wheel Sprinter. I mean if it’s you and one other person, the Sprinter would be the way to go.
Otherwise, you might have to go all the way to a Chevy Step-Van or Ford F-53.
If you wanted a separate cab, then why not build an Isuzu N chassis or Mitsubishi Fuso FG? The Mitsu can even be had with 4WD.

Only thing is, the Sprinter doesn’t have quite the same ground clearance. The Mitsu is certainly an option. Another one I had toyed around with is converting my grandpa’s 1953 grain truck into a camper. Again, not a ton of off-road chops, but it could look pretty cool.

Since the Sprinter has a factory 4WD option now (but only with single rear wheels), you do get a bit more ground clearance than the standard van.
If I wanted to build something myself, the Mitsu would be the way to go. If I didn’t, and I was OK with a non-cabover, you could do this...
Downside? $300K-500K to get EarthRoamer to build one for you, but that does include an F-550 chassis cab as part of the deal.

Interesting about the Sprinter having 4WD. I had no idea that was an option.
I do dig the EarthRoamer, but dang, those prices. Makes me wonder if a person could do it on his/her own for a lot less (albeit more ghetto).

Some husband/wife team did a Mitsu FG 4x4 build with a triple pivot and damped isolation frame for the truck camper. They claim that it could be done for about $100K if you did a lot of the fabrication yourself.

Also for clarification, the Sprinter 4x4 system cannot be had with the super high roof package, just standard and high roof. You are required to get the V6 turbodiesel, and can have either 2500 single or 3500 dual rear wheels. (I went and looked it up because it’s better to be right)
